Dirty Honey Viper Room Live Stream Concert Review
Dirty Honey in conjunction with KLOS Radio and the Viper Room Present: Lock Down Live a live music video stream July 24 2020 Worldwide
Dirty Honey rocked the Viper Room and households Worldwide with the first ever live- stream concert from the Viper Room in Hollywood CA on July 24, 2020. The show was presented in conjunction with Los Angeles radio station KLOS and was a giant step forward to kick starting the music industry that has been hit so hard by the extended closing of venues everywhere during this pandemic. The last time Dirty Honey hit the stage was on February 28, 2020 at the El Rey Theater before a sold out crowd of home town fans here in Los Angeles!
Prior to the pandemic, the band had an event schedule that was like a freight train racing down the tracks with a remarkable amount of different engagements in front of them, such as recording a new LP with famed producer Nick DiDia, interviews, photo sessions and yes more touring; that of course all came to a grinding halt as it did for everyone when the lock downs hit!
Even during the lock down, the band has been keeping busy making music with their “Suitcase Sessions” The “Suitcase Sessions” are a set of videos that are mostly from “on on the road”, and cast in an isolated surrounding. Recently, a video from these sessions was released for their blues classic “Down The Road”, which features a stunning backdrop of the city of Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium.
As far as live music, the Viper Room live-stream concert is not only their first live show since February 28, 2020 but according to the Viper Room’s general manager Tom Black, it’s the first ever live-stream in concert broadcast from the Viper Room!!!
We may not be able to attend a live concert just yet but this live-stream concert was a lot of fun after so many months of lock down and no live music; and partying in your living room was pretty damn cool as well.
The band presented the entirety of their smash debut release, Dirty Honey as well as a few new songs to wet the appetites of the DH fans, giving the fans a glimpse of what’s in store musically for them once we get on the other side of this mess.
The show started off backstage with the band and KLOS DJ Frank Kramer from the Heidi and Frank show joining together for a pre-show toast. Kramer presented the band with filled shot glasses and proposed a toast in the interest hydration. Although I believe the real underlying significance for the toast was to salute the band and everyone attending the concert for joining together to help keep live music alive during these unprecedented times.
Drummer Corey Coverstone was the only one of the bunch that was wearing a mask during the toast and he toasted everyone non-the-less keeping the spirit. There’s no fault in not drinking alcohol and keeping one’s immune system at it’s peak performance; besides hydration is better achieved with a non-alcoholic drink anyway!
The band hit the stage in top form with guitarist John Notto launching the band into a rock n roll jam with singer Marc Labelle belting out the band’s name. They seamlessly segued into a scorching version of Scars from their debut EP, proving that the band has gathered no moss during the COVID pause/isolation. They immediately stepped into a string of new songs starting with Gypsy, an uptempo rocker that embodies the band’s signature sound, offering a glimpse into just how bad ass their upcoming LP is gonna be….can’t wait!
They continued with more blistering new music with Breaking, Start All Over and The Wire.
After the new music, LaBelle then introduced the next song by saying to drummer, Corey Coverstone, you know what’s next! Coverstone fired into the fan favorite “Heartbreaker” that ended with Coverstone pounding out the tom tom groove to the Van Halen Classic, Everybody Wants Some. The VH instrumental gave way to Coverstone ripping through an impressive solo (with his mask on) that had the drummer shredding every piece of his drum kit until he dropped back into the VH tom groove that brought the band back into the VH jam.
They seamlessly went from the VH groove into their blues classic On Down the Road that brought the house down at the El Rey Theater on Feb. 28, 2020.
LaBelle introduced the next song as more new music that was created from an idea that they came up with while on the road in Canada; it’s called Rebel Son.
Guitarist John Notto then took center stage, shredding away on a guitar solo that was a combination of crafty rhythms and burning guitar riffs before leading the band back into a subtle outro jam of On Down the Road that escalated into a shredding blues burner.
They finished out their set with When I’m Gone and Rolling 7″s. Dirty Honey also made music history when they became the first unsigned artist to ever hit #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart with their debut track “When I’m Gone.”
At the show’s end, singer LaBelle graciously thanked everyone for watching and said; we’ll see you all again on the other side of the shit hole mess that we’re all in!
The set list was:
Scars
Gypsy
Breaking
Start All Over
The Wire
Heartbreaker
